Background
This unsolicited critique examines the Disney+ app across usability, interaction flow, visual design, and information architecture, proposing solutions that enhance the user experience and demonstrate how strategic design methodology informs product evolution at scale.
Review the Mission and Vision Statement
I began by examining Disney's mission and vision statements from the corporate website. Grounding the critique in these principles ensures that proposed improvements align with Disney's stated commitments to storytelling, innovation, and inclusivity, not just UX best practices.

Disney+ Value Proposition
To further anchor my product design decisions in the Disney+ experience, I reviewed and outlined the app's value proposition by analyzing its App Store listings and information from The Walt Disney Company's official website. Disney+ is positioned as a premium streaming service offering exclusive access to the vast Disney library, including content from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and more. It emphasizes delivering high-quality, family-friendly entertainment, original series, and films, with a seamless, personalized viewing experience across devices.
By understanding this value proposition, I was able to ensure that my design critique and suggestions focus on enhancing key features such as storytelling, content discovery, and value. This reinforces the app's promise of delivering unparalleled entertainment in a simple and enjoyable way.

Understand the Top-Line Business Objectives
To understand the broader business objectives that influence the development of Disney+, I reviewed The Walt Disney Company's annual report, focusing on the key metrics for its Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) segment, which includes Disney+. The primary success metrics for this line of business include increasing the number of paid subscribers, boosting subscription fee revenue, growing advertising revenue, increasing average monthly revenue per paid subscriber, and reducing D2C operating expenses.
These business goals provide critical context for my app critique, as any design recommendations must not only improve the user experience but also support Disney's efforts to drive subscriber growth and maximize revenue while keeping costs in check. By anchoring my suggestions to these success metrics, I ensure that the design improvements align with both user needs and the company's strategic business objectives.

Develop a Micro Persona
Shifting focus from business metrics to the user, I developed what I call a "Micro Persona" to foster empathy across teams such as product, engineering, and design. This one-page asset includes essential demographic data, an AI-generated image of the persona in their daily life, and insights into their emotional state, goals, and concerns. It also explores how they typically spend their day and highlights the Disney franchises that hold nostalgic value for them.
By creating this snapshot, I ensure that all stakeholders have a clear, humanized understanding of the user's motivations and behaviors, which can inform design decisions and keep the user experience at the forefront of the product development process. This approach not only helps align internal teams but also grounds the product vision in the real-life experiences of Disney+ subscribers.
The Micro Persona asset serves as a catalyst for ideation across teams by putting a relatable face to the user, encouraging cross-functional collaboration. It helps spark discussions around how to better meet user needs, uncover new opportunities for engagement, and refine features in a way that resonates emotionally with the target audience.

Define Likely User Goals
To understand the potential goals of Disney+ users, I analyzed data sourced from public forums such as Reddit, X (formerly Twitter), and App Store reviews. In a full engagement, these findings would be cross-validated through moderated interviews and behavioral analytics. For this critique, I triangulated across Reddit, X, and App Store reviews to establish directional confidence in the user goals. I focused on common themes and desires expressed in these platforms, such as seamless content discovery, nostalgic experiences, and personalized recommendations that reflect user preferences and viewing habits. These insights provided a foundational understanding of the emotional drivers that influence user behavior.
I organized the user goals into three categories: deep emotional goals (what users want), the things users say that reflect those deep goals (what users say), and the measurable behaviors that indicate whether those goals are being met (what users will do). For example, a deep emotional goal might be building new memories with family and friends, which users may express by saying things like "I can watch the movies and shows I remember from my childhood". Measurable behaviors would include increased engagement with older Disney content or rewatching specific nostalgic titles.
This structured approach ensures that both qualitative and quantitative data are considered when analyzing user behavior and helps teams make more informed decisions about the user experience.

Decide Which User Tasks to Focus On
In my analysis, I will focus on key user tasks that are central to the Disney+ app experience. These tasks include navigating the home screen, searching for content, managing user profiles, and engaging with personalized recommendations. Each task represents a critical touchpoint in the user journey and will be examined for its ease of use, alignment with user goals, and impact on the user experience. The specific tasks are outlined in the visual artifact that follows.

First Impression - Intro Screen
My first impression of the Disney+ login screen is broken down into three stages: what is working, areas for improvement, and recommendations. Each screen review will follow this same approach. Details, along with before-and-after concepts and a full breakdown, are included in the visual artifact that follows.

Flow Analysis - Login Experience
Next, I traced the end-to-end login flow that a returning subscriber moves through to reach their account, examining both the email and password entry steps for friction points and missed opportunities. The visual artifact that follows captures the full breakdown alongside before-and-after concepts.

First Impression - Profile Selection Screen
From there, I turned to the profile selection screen that subscribers encounter at the start of every session, with particular attention to access control, parental controls, and account management. The accompanying visual artifact walks through the strengths, gaps, and recommended adjustments alongside before-and-after concepts.

Flow Analysis - Editing or Creating a Profile
Building on the profile selection review, I worked through the flow for editing and creating a profile, focusing on parental controls, accessibility, and how supporting content is surfaced through the Help Center. Both the edit profile screen and its Help Center handoff are explored in the visual artifact below, paired with before-and-after concepts.

First Impression - Home Screen
With the account layer reviewed, I shifted attention to the Disney+ home screen, the primary entry point for content discovery. My evaluation looked closely at the featured content carousel, franchise navigation, and personalized collections, weighing each against the user goals identified earlier. The visual artifact that follows lays out the findings and proposed direction in greater detail.

Flow Analysis - Finding Nostalgic Content
Returning to the emotional goals identified earlier in the user research, I traced the path a subscriber takes when searching for nostalgic titles. The search experience, results presentation, and opportunities for nostalgia-driven personalization were each evaluated for how well they honor that emotional intent, with the full breakdown and before-and-after concepts captured in the visual artifact that follows.

Flow Analysis - Discovering New & Recommended Content
Beyond nostalgia, I examined how subscribers encounter new and recommended content as they move through the home screen, focusing on personalization, ratings feedback, and the recommendation engine that powers it. The featured row, newly added and new releases, and the continue watching experience each played a role in shaping the analysis, which is presented in full alongside before-and-after concepts in the visual artifact below.

Flow Analysis - Managing an Existing Subscription
Closing out the evaluation phase, I followed the path a subscriber takes when reviewing or changing an existing subscription, including the handoff between the mobile app and the Disney+ website. Account management, bundle selection, and the consistency of design patterns between the native and web experiences each surfaced friction worth addressing, with the complete analysis and before-and-after concepts laid out in the visual artifact that follows.

Strategic Product Opportunities - AI Generated Localization
Shifting from evaluation to ideation, I outlined a strategic product opportunity that ties directly back to the business goals and user goals defined earlier in this critique. This concept proposes leveraging AI to automatically generate subtitle translations and dubbed audio for existing content, expanding the reach of Disney+ into new markets while helping subscribers watch more relevant content with the people they care about. Details on the underlying goals, the proposed approach, and a sample of the player experience are included in the visual artifact that follows.

AI Localization Prototype - Portuguese Dub Sample
To pressure test the localization concept, I produced a short proof of concept that dubs a scene from Captain America: Brave New World from English into Portuguese using ElevenLabs. The result demonstrates two qualities worth highlighting. First, the Portuguese voices preserve the timbre and cadence of the original performers, retaining the character identity that audiences connect with. Second, ambient room tone and on-set sound effects carry through the dub automatically, so the scene still reads as cinematic rather than post-dubbed.
This is not a replacement for professional human dubbing. The long-term path should still route through real voice actors, who deliver the emotional nuance and cultural interpretation that define a high-quality localization. In the interim, AI dubs offer a practical middle ground. Subscribers in underserved markets can hear a film in their native language on day one, even if the audio quality is not yet at the level of a traditional studio dub. The sample below illustrates what that bridge can look like today.
Strategic Product Opportunities - No Ads Trial for Existing Customers
Continuing the shift from evaluation to ideation, I outlined a second strategic product opportunity that ties back to both the business goals and user goals defined earlier in this critique. This concept proposes giving existing with-ads subscribers a limited preview of the no-ads experience, then surfacing the time they saved at the end of the trial as a moment of decision to upgrade. Details on the underlying goals, the proposed approach, and concepts for the trial offer and trial summary screens are included in the visual artifact that follows.

Strategic Product Opportunities - Disney Audiobooks
Continuing the shift from evaluation to ideation, I outlined a third strategic product opportunity that ties back to both the business goals and user goals defined earlier in this critique. This concept proposes extending the Disney+ subscription beyond video to include an audiobook offering, giving subscribers a way to engage with beloved Disney stories during commutes, while working, or away from screens. Details on the underlying goals, the proposed approach, and a sample of the audiobook player are included in the visual artifact that follows.

Strategic Product Opportunities - iMessage Sticker Pack and Gift Cards
Continuing the shift from evaluation to ideation, I outlined a fourth strategic product opportunity that ties back to both the business goals and user goals defined earlier in this critique. This concept proposes two complementary iMessage integrations: a Disney+ branded sticker pack that drives organic brand awareness through everyday social conversations, and a native gift card experience that allows subscribers to send Disney+ subscriptions and themed gift cards directly within iMessage using Apple Wallet. Together, these integrations create new pathways for subscriber acquisition while deepening emotional connection with the brand. Details on the underlying goals, the proposed approach, and concepts for both the sticker pack and gift card experiences are included in the visual artifact that follows.

Strategic Product Opportunities - Exclusive Disney+ Merch at Disney Parks
Closing out the shift from evaluation to ideation, I outlined a fifth strategic product opportunity that ties back to both the business goals and user goals defined earlier in this critique. This concept proposes an exclusive subscriber-only merchandise store at Disney Parks, accessed through a dynamic QR code generated within the Disney+ app. Existing subscribers gain entry as a tangible perk of their membership, while non-subscribers can scan a QR code outside the store to quickly create an account, turning a physical retail moment into a new acquisition channel and strengthening collaboration between the Disney+ and Disney Parks lines of business. Details on the underlying goals, the proposed approach, and a sample of the in-app QR access screen are included in the visual artifact that follows.
To address any consumer concern that store access requires a paid subscription, non-subscribers would be offered a free trial of Disney+ as the entry path rather than an immediate charge. This preserves the exclusivity of the experience for existing members while ensuring that guests at Disney Parks are never gated behind a mandatory purchase to access the store itself.
